Announcing 2026 Advanced Medical Student Research Fellowship Recipients

February 17, 2026

The Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) is pleased to announce medical students Daniel Chan, Andrew Devine, and Hanbit Joseph Lee as the recipients of the 2026 Advanced Medical Student Research Fellowship (AMSRF). The AMSRF Program expands on the Medical Student Anesthesia Research Fellowship (MSARF) Program to offer past MSARF participants the opportunity to spend up to one year focusing on anesthesiology research and receiving additional training under the guidance of a dedicated mentor. The program culminates in participants presenting their research at the FAER/eSAS: A Day for New Researchers event held annually at ANESTHESIOLOGY®.

“I am excited to see Daniel, Andrew, and Joseph selected as this year’s Advanced Medical Student Research Fellows. The future of science in anesthesiology hinges on equipping talented young investigators like these with the skills and knowledge needed to make meaningful contributions to our specialty. The passion for research these students displayed during their time with the MSARF Program was palpable. I look forward to watching them continue to grow and flourish as they immerse themselves further in research through the AMSRF Program. And, in time, watching how they will help shape science in anesthesiology.

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank our 2026 AMSRF mentors – Drs. Dieter Adelmann, Brittany Willer, Ana Fernandez-Bustamante, and Kenji Tanabe – for volunteering their time and expertise in guiding these students. The AMSRF Program would not be possible without their and their departments’ support, and FAER is deeply grateful to call them friends.”
- Chad M. Brummett, MD, Chair of the Academic Pathways Committee, Chair-Elect of the FAER Board of Directors

It is vital that aspiring physician-investigators are provided the skills, knowledge, and guidance early in their career to help them go on to make meaningful contributions to science in anesthesiology. The AMSRF Program is a powerful tool in this regard, building on the MSARF Program by extending participants’ immersion in the world of anesthesiology research and providing them with further training in scientific methods and research techniques, all guided by an experienced mentor.

Mr. Chan will complete his Advanced Fellowship UCSF under the guidance of his mentor Dieter Adelmann, MD, PhD, a 2025 Mentored Research Training Grant (MRTG) recipient. Mr. Chan’s project is titled “Blood Product Utilization in Liver Transplantation: A Multicenter Study of the Impact of Transfusion Practices on Long-Term Recipient Survival.”

"I am incredibly honored and grateful to have been selected for the FAER AMSRF Program! This is a full-circle moment for me and my mentor, Dr. Dieter Adelmann, whom I have been working with ever since I connected with him as a 2024 MSARF summer fellow. This fellowship will allow me to participate in the entire research life cycle, develop valuable research skills, and advance patient care with the Transplant Anesthesia Research Group at UCSF.

“My project is both exciting and meaningful, as I hope to improve intraoperative safety by studying transfusion practices for liver transplant recipients. I am thankful for and inspired by FAER’s generosity in making early-career opportunities like this available to aspiring academic anesthesiologists like me. The FAER MSARF and AMSRF Programs have had a transformative impact on my professional journey in medicine; I hope to emulate the same atmosphere of supportive inquiry & scholarship as a future physician-investigator!”

Mr. Devine will complete his Advanced Fellowship at the Nationwide Children’s Hospital under the guidance of his mentor Brittany Willer, MD, a 2013 Resident Scholar Program (RSP) participant. Mr. Devine’s project is titled “Silent Respiratory Tract Infection and Pediatric Surgical Outcomes.”

"I am so excited to further deepen my anesthetic foundation and knowledge by participating in AMSRF this upcoming school year. My experience with FAER started with simply Googling ‘anesthesia summer research for medical students.’ That simple search turned into my participation in the FAER MSARF Program and was my springboard into anesthesia research.

“MSARF allowed me to appreciate both the clinical and emotional roles an anesthesiologist has on a patient care team. The AMSRF Program will open so many additional doors in my career through research and networking. I cannot wait to start this incredible experience!”
- Andrew Devine, 2026 AMSRF Program Participant

Mr. Lee will complete his Advanced Fellowship at the University of Colorado under the guidance of his mentors Ana Fernandez-Bustamante, MD, PhD, FASA, a 2012 MRTG recipient, and Kenji Tanabe, MD. Mr. Lee’s project is titled “Perioperative Lung Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS-Lung) and Respiratory Function and Outcomes.”

"In Summer 2024, I participated in the MSARF Program at the University of Colorado Anschutz, focusing on the perioperative utility of lung point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS-Lung). Working closely with my mentors, Dr. Ana Fernandez-Bustamante and Dr. Kenji Tanabe, not only sparked my clinical interest in anesthesiology but also deepened my appreciation for the role of research in improving perioperative outcomes. I found anesthesiology research to be both intellectually stimulating and deeply fulfilling, with the potential to meaningfully impact patient care.

“My enthusiasm for anesthesiology, research, and POCUS continued to grow as I collaborated with my mentors beyond the MSARF period. I am deeply grateful to my mentors and to FAER for the opportunity to participate in the 2026 AMSRF Program. Throughout the six-month AMSRF fellowship, I will further investigate the relationship between POCUS-Lung findings and perioperative respiratory function and outcomes."
- Hanbit Joseph Lee, 2026 AMSRF Participant
