Social media is increasingly becoming an important part of the professional life of the anesthesiologist. There are a number of blogs and websites that contain valuable information on patient safety.
Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation
The Anesthesia Patient Safety Foundation (APSF) is a multidisciplinary foundation whose mission is to improve patient safety by supporting safety research and education, patient safety programs and campaigns, and the national and international exchange of ideas. Founded in 1985 as a nonprofit organization, APSF’s vision is that no patient shall be harmed by anesthesia. The APSF website is an excellent resource of patient safety resources, including educational videos and a quarterly newsletter.
Institute for Healthcare Improvement
Founded over 25 years ago, the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) works with health care professionals across disciplines to utilize improvement science to advance and sustain improved health outcomes. The IHI has four main goals: to pursue safe and high-quality care, to improve the health of populations, to build the capability to improve, and to innovate and spark action. The IHI has an “Open School” that contains free educational modules on quality improvement and patient safety.
Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality
The mission of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is to produce evidence that will improve safety and quality in healthcare. The AHRQ invests in research, creates training materials to put that research into practice and generates data used by health care organizations and policymakers. The AHRQ website has excellent data on national health outcomes of interest, as well as state-level data on quality measures.
Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology
The Society for Obstetric Anesthesia and Perinatology (SOAP) was founded in 1968 to improve pregnancy-related outcomes through research and education. Its site has excellent resources for clinicians on look-alike drugs and clinical safety alerts.
Voices for Safer Care: Insights from the Armstrong Institute
Powered by experts from the Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality, Voices for Safer Care provides a forum to discuss ways to end preventable harm and improve patient outcomes. The site has numerous blog articles on quality improvement and patient safety.
MedStar Institute for Safety and Quality
The MedStar Institute for Safety and Quality (MIQS) works with organizations to improve patient care and outcomes and to reduce the global burden of preventable harm. MIQS has an informative blog with pertinent articles on issues in patient safety and quality.
