Accurate coding and billing are essential not only for ensuring anesthesiologists are fairly reimbursed for their services, but also for maintaining compliance, streamlining workflows, and supporting effective documentation practices. Facilities, anesthesia groups, and individual providers all benefit when claims are properly submitted, supported by thorough documentation, and efficiently appealed when necessary. ASA offers up-to-date resources to help members navigate billing requirements, understand anesthesia-specific coding principles, and improve revenue cycle management. These tools empower anesthesiologists and their teams to build stronger, more sustainable financial practices.
ASA members can submit specific coding and billing questions to CodingHelp@asahq.org to receive expert guidance on appropriate billing practices. Please include your ASA membership number, as this service is available exclusively to members.

ASA Payment and Practice Management communicates with Federal, State, and Private Payers and advocates for appropriate and fair payments. Oftentimes, this involves protecting anesthesiologist payments from unnecessary cuts, as well as explaining how anesthesia payment works.
ASA participates in the CPT code development and evaluation of CPT codes with other medical specialties. ASA creates appropriate codes for anesthesiologists and, pain medicine physicians, based on appropriate evidence-base application criteria that is established by the CPT Editorial panel. ASA represents and advocates for you in the CPT development process, ensuring a fair, evidence-based approach with objectivity and integrity for all members.
ASA also advocates for a fair anesthesia payment by participating through the Relative Value Scale (RVS) Update Committee (RUC) process. ASA develops relative value recommendations for anesthesia, critical care, and pain services using member survey data. Recommendations from the RUC are submitted to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for implementation in the Medicare Physician Fee Schedule. Those codes and their values are also used by private payers.
Without intervention from Congress, Medicare payments for anesthesia services will continue to stagnate. Sign up for ASA Grassroots to stay informed and ready to advocate for essential reforms—such as raising Medicare’s budget neutrality limits and applying an inflation adjuster to Part B physician payments.
ASA also periodically surveys members on specific CPT codes and emerging services to help determine appropriate values. Be prepared to participate—learn how to complete a RUC survey.
