Tom notes, "I majored in biology and minored in English in college. Retrospectively, if I had more courage, I would have instead majored in English and minored in mathematics (‘the language of science’). I would have spent a semester abroad in Paris and become fluent in French.”
So, in mid-career, Tom obtained a quantitative Master of Public Health from the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, and later in life, a Master of Fine Arts in nonfiction writing from Lindenwood University in St. Louis. He also completed the Certificate in Professional Achievement in narrative medicine at Columbia University. And Tom still aspires to become fluent in French!
