ASA’s president, Dr. Patrick Giam, joins Dr. Adam Striker to discuss the specialty, the society, and the future. He shares his thoughts on ASA’s plans and anesthesiology’s most salient issues, from workforce and physician wellness to payment advocacy and mentorship. Recorded February 2026.
Patrick Giam, MD, FASA, is president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). He was elected in October 2025. Dr. Giam is a physician partner of U.S. Anesthesia Partners in Houston, Texas, a clinical assistant professor of Weill Cornell Medical College, an assistant professor of clinical anesthesiology at the Houston Methodist Academic Institute, and an adjunct clinical assistant professor of the Texas A&M School of Medicine.
A long-time member of ASA and advocate for the specialty, Dr. Giam has served ASA in numerous roles, most recently as president-elect. He has also been first vice president, chair of the Division of Administrative Affairs, speaker of the House of Delegates, and chair of the Committee on Large Group Practice. Dr. Giam has served as a member of the Committee on Bylaws, Special Board Committee on Expert Witness Testimony, Committee on Neuroanesthesiology, Committee on Practice Management, Committee on Budget, Committee on Credentials, and Committee on Governance Effectiveness and Efficiencies.
He has also served on several ad hoc committees, including the following: Accountable Care Organizations, Governing Documents Alignment, NACOR Assessment and Business Development, Quality Practice Recognition, Payment Reform, Board Certification and Maintenance, and Annual Meeting Assessment. Dr. Giam is a former director of the Anesthesia Quality Institute and a former member of the Executive Board of the ASA Political Action Committee.
He is a long-serving member of the Texas Society of Anesthesiologists and was president in 2009. He is a member of the Texas Medical Association, the American Institute of Parliamentarians, and is a registered parliamentarian of the National Association of Parliamentarians.
Dr. Giam received his Bachelor of Science degree in zoology from Texas A&M University in College Station and his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. He completed his internship in internal medicine and his residency in anesthesiology at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and his fellowship in cardiovascular anesthesiology at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston, Texas. He is board-certified in anesthesiology.
Adam Striker, MD, FASA, is the past chair of the ASA’s Committee on Communications and is the series editor for ASA’s Central Line podcast series. He is Professor of Anesthesiology at Medical College of Wisconsin, a pediatric cardiac anesthesiologist at Children’s Wisconsin and serves as Director of Clinical Operations for pediatric anesthesiology at Children's Wisconsin. He received his undergraduate degree in engineering from Purdue University and his medical degree from Indiana University. He completed his pediatric anesthesiology fellowship at Northwestern University.
