Dr. Alexander Choi, guest editor of October’s ASA Monitor, joins Dr. Keya Locke to discuss some of anesthesiology’s most pressing challenges and priorities. Alex Choi, MD, MPH, FASA, attended Indiana University School of Medicine where he completed his anesthesia residency before he went on to receive a master’s in public health with a focus on policy and management. After residency, he joined Anesthesia Consultants of Indianapolis where he served as president, chairman of the board, and the managing partner of the practice. Dr. Choi went on to develop his consulting and government affairs practice, the Choi Consulting Group, in 2023. Currently, he is the chairman of the board for the Indiana Physicians Health Alliance.
Dr. Choi is a past president of the Indiana Society of Anesthesiologists and is on their board of directors. At the American Society of Anesthesiologists, he served as the chair of the Committee on Practice Management and managed the Conference on Practice Management. He is also currently the chair for the ASA’s Committee on Government Affairs. Dr. Choi has also been heavily involved in public policy, having served on the transition team of three governors as well as being a candidate for Indiana State Senate, District 29. He also served on the Zionsville town council.
Keya Locke, MD, MBA, serves as the medical director of perioperative services at UF-North in Jacksonville Florida. Dr. Locke has been an assistant professor at UF Jacksonville since 2017. She completed medical school at UF Gainesville, residency at UF Jacksonville, and graduated from UF Warrington School of Business with an MBA in 2020. Her current interests include practice management and organizational behavior. She hopes to bring a better understanding of how organizations “breathe” and begin to apply strategies of successful organizations to medical ones. Dr. Locke is a member of the ASA practice management and women in anesthesia committees.
