The ASA Committee on Innovation has compiled a collection of advanced education and training opportunities, ranging from perioperative medicine fellowships to digital health and design programs. This listing of non-standard fellowships, combined programs, and other courses is a sample of the unique learning opportunities that exist for anesthesiologists after their residencies. These programs are not favored or endorsed by the ASA in any way.
Stanford Fellowship in the Management of Perioperative Services
Description from Stanford: This fellowship in management, entrepreneurship, quality, and leadership for the clinician is one of the first of its kind to be offered by a Department of Anesthesia. Instructors are drawn from members of the Stanford University Hospital administration, medical staff, nursing staff, Business School, and the Departments of Economics, Health Research and Policy, and Anesthesia. The fellow audits courses on the Stanford Campus and then applies that knowledge in relevant projects.
Stanford Anesthesia Informatics and Media Lab Fellowship
Description from Stanford: This is an innovative new program. Informatics is a broad field encompassing artificial intelligence, cognitive science, computer science, information science, and social science. The goal of this fellowship is to train physicians in informatics so they can be leaders in this growing field. One application for example is the use of Web 2.0 information technologies to improve education, research, and patient care. No experience in computer programming is required for this fellowship.
Duke University – Dream Innovation Grant
Description from Duke: The Duke DREAM (Developing Research Excellence in Anesthesia Management) Campaign was established to support Duke Anesthesiology’s research programs and initiatives. Harvard – HealthTech Innovation in Healthcare Fellowship
Description from Harvard: A 10-month fellowship that teaches the next generation of healthcare innovators how to harness technology, engineering, business, and cutting-edge science to define a new standard of medical care. This fellowship embeds teams in clinical settings to expose urgent, unmet healthcare needs, then design and test innovative solutions with guidance from mentors in the medtech, health care, and innovation sectors.
Mass General Brigham – Innovation Fellows Program
Description from Mass General Brigham: The Innovation Fellows Program enables personnel exchanges between Mass General Brigham hospitals and participating industry. Biopharmaceutical, device, venture capital, and digital health companies engage with early-career Harvard faculty and trainees appointed at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital and McLean Hospital. Fellows gain the competencies they need to become future leaders in health care through short term, team-based experiential Fellow Projects onsite at industry.
University of Alabama at Birmingham – Perioperative Leadership Fellowship
Description from UAB: Our fellow will join our faculty as a full-time staff anesthesiologist with full benefits. The fellow will complete a Perioperative Leadership Project during the course of this two-year fellowship to be presented at Anesthesia Grand Rounds, as well as a national meeting such as ASA ADVANCE or the AACD Perioperative Leadership Summit.
University of California at San Francisco – Pathways to Discovery
Description from UCSF:The GME Pathways Program is a multi-disciplinary, inter-professional program open to residents and fellows at every level. The program supports the pursuit of inquiry and innovation in the career of every health professional trained at UCSF. Pathways trainees are provided with a mentoring community and opportunities to explore academic disciplines through a scholarly project. In some pathways, trainees may earn a certificate or credits towards an advanced degree. These pathways can be done concurrently with your anesthesiology residency and are fully supported by the program.
University of Pittsburg Medical Center – Innovation Pathway
